A CLIA UK Cruise Master is a travel agent who holds a professional cruise accreditation from CLIA UK, the UK arm of the Cruise Lines International Association. In plain terms, it shows the person planning your cruise has been trained and assessed on cruise, not just on holidays in general.
That matters because cruise booking is a different skill from booking a hotel and flights. The wrong ship, cabin or itinerary is expensive to fix once you have paid.
What CLIA is, and why its accreditation carries weight
CLIA is the main trade body for the cruise industry, representing the major cruise lines. Its accreditation for agents is a recognised way for a customer to tell a cruise specialist from an agent who sells the occasional sailing.
What a cruise specialist should be doing for you
When you book with a qualified cruise specialist, you should expect help with:
- Choosing the right ship. Ships differ sharply on atmosphere, age profile and onboard offer. Our best cruise lines for beginners guide shows how much the choice varies.
- Choosing the right length. A short sailing and a grand voyage suit different travellers. Read our guide on mini-cruise or grand voyage before you commit.
- Matching the itinerary to you. A relaxed sailing for later life is very different from a family trip. See our cruise itineraries for retired couples for one example.
- Cabin choice. Position on the ship can matter more than cabin category.
- Joined-up travel. Flights, hotels and transfers either side of the sailing, planned as one trip.
Why this matters in North Wales
Global Travel Worldwide, trading as The Cruise Centre UK, is headed by one of only two CLIA UK Cruise Masters in Wales. For cruise customers across Wrexham, Ruthin, Mold, Llangollen and Cheshire, that means specialist advice from a local team, not a call centre.
Five questions to ask any cruise agent
- Do you hold a recognised cruise accreditation, and can I check it?
- Which cruise lines do you sell, and are you tied to one?
- How do you decide which ship suits me?
- What happens if my sailing or flights change?
- Who do I speak to after I have booked?
For the fourth question, it also helps to understand how ABTA and ATOL protection work, so you know what your booking is covered by.
Is an independent specialist better than booking online?
Online booking works for a simple sailing you already understand. A specialist earns their fee on complex or first-time bookings, and when something goes wrong. We set out the wider case in why use a travel agent in 2026.
