Travelling on your own after 50 is one of the fastest-growing ways to holiday, and a city break is the easiest place to start. The flight is short, the trip is three or four nights, and everything you want to see is within walking distance of your hotel. Our Wrexham team plans solo city breaks for travellers across North Wales, as part of our wider range of solo holidays for over 50s.
This guide covers which cities work well on your own, where to stay, how to handle eating out alone, and how to get to the airport from Wrexham.
Why a city break suits a first solo trip
- Short flights. Most of the cities below are around two to three hours from Manchester or Liverpool.
- Compact centres. You can walk between the main sights and use simple public transport for the rest.
- Easy dining. Cafés, food markets and tapas bars make eating alone feel natural.
- Low commitment. Three or four nights is long enough to enjoy a city and short enough to test how you like travelling solo.
Cities that work well on your own
Flight times are approximate from Manchester. Routes and airports vary by season, so ask us what flies from your nearest airport on your dates.
| City | Why it suits solo travellers | Flight time | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kraków | A compact old town, a lively main square and good value | About 2.5 hours | History and value |
| Lisbon | Trams, viewpoints and a relaxed café culture | About 2.5 to 3 hours | Food and sightseeing |
| Valencia | A walkable centre with a city beach a short tram ride away | About 2.5 hours | Culture with sunshine |
| Copenhagen | Very easy to navigate, with excellent public transport | About 2 hours | Design and harbour walks |
| Vienna | Coffee houses, museums and concerts most evenings | About 2.5 hours | Music and culture |

Choosing where to stay
- Location first. A central hotel saves on taxis and means you can head back for a rest between sights.
- Single rooms and supplements. Some hotels have single rooms; others charge a supplement for a double room for sole use. We compare both so you can see the difference.
- Somewhere sociable. A hotel bar or lounge, or a small hotel where the staff know guests by name, makes evenings easier.
- Breakfast included. It is one less meal to plan and a good time to map out your day.
Eating alone without feeling awkward
Many solo travellers find dinner the only part of the day that takes getting used to. A few simple habits help:
- Choose restaurants with counter or bar seating, where dining alone is normal.
- Make lunch your main meal. It is often better value and less formal.
- Book a food tour or cookery class early in the trip. You meet other people and pick up recommendations for the rest of your stay.
Join something for part of the trip
A walking tour on your first morning is the quickest way to get your bearings. Day trips, guided museum visits and evening concerts add structure without taking over the whole break. If you would rather travel with others from the start, escorted small-group tours are covered on our solo holidays for over 50s page.
Getting to the airport from Wrexham
Manchester Airport and Liverpool John Lennon Airport are the closest major airports for most North Wales departures. Our Manchester airport transfers and Liverpool airport transfers pages explain the options from Wrexham and Ruthin, so you are not left arranging parking or a lift on your own.

Solo city break FAQs
Is a city break a good first solo holiday over 50?
Yes. Short flights, walkable centres and plenty to do in the evenings make a city break the easiest way to try travelling on your own.
Will I have to pay a single supplement?
Often, but not always. Some hotels offer single rooms or lower supplements outside peak dates. Tell us your budget and we will compare the options.
Can you book flights from Manchester or Liverpool?
Yes, depending on the route and season. Tell us your preferred airport and we will price the options together.
Can I join a group instead of travelling completely alone?
Yes. Escorted small-group tours give you company and a guide while you still travel solo. Ask us which suit your interests.
