By Global Travel Worldwide
An adventure holiday after 50 does not have to mean extremes. For most of our solo travellers it means walking somewhere spectacular, cycling between villages, or seeing wildlife up close, at a pace that suits them. Our Wrexham team plans active solo trips for travellers across North Wales, alongside our wider solo holidays for over 50s and adventure holidays.
This guide covers the types of adventure that suit solo travellers over 50, how to pick the right level, and what to check before you book.
Types of solo adventure that suit over-50s
Walking holidays
Self-guided walking holidays give you a route, maps and hotels booked in advance, often with your luggage moved between stops. Guided walking groups add company and local knowledge. Madeira’s levada paths, the Italian Lakes and the Portuguese coast are popular places to start.
Cycling holidays
E-bikes have opened up cycling holidays to many more people. Flat river routes and vineyard trails make an easy introduction. Our guide to the best cycling breaks has destination ideas.
Wildlife and nature
Whale watching, birdwatching and national park tours suit travellers who want adventure without long days of exertion. Iceland, Norway and Costa Rica are well set up for small-group nature trips.
Small-group adventure tours
A small-group tour solves most solo travel questions at once: someone else handles the logistics, there is company at dinner, and a guide sets the pace. Many operators offer single rooms or will pair you with another solo traveller of the same sex to share.
Scenic rail journeys
For adventure with comfort, a long rail journey shows you landscapes you would never see from a plane. Read about the Rocky Mountaineer or our article on rail travel in Europe.
Active wellness
Some trips combine yoga, hiking and spa time. Our guide to wellness and slow travel covers this growing area.
Choosing the right level
Operators grade their trips, but grades vary between companies. Use this as a starting point and we will check the detail with the operator for you.
| Level | What it usually means | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Gentle | Three to four hours of activity a day on mostly flat ground | Madeira levada walks, river cycling |
| Moderate | Five to six hours a day with some climbs | Italian Lakes walking, coastal trails |
| Challenging | Long days, steep ground or altitude | High mountain treks |
Solo or small group?
- Self-guided suits travellers who like their own pace and are comfortable following a route.
- Guided small groups suit travellers who want company, a fixed itinerary and support on the ground.
- Single supplements vary widely. Some operators waive them on certain departures, so ask us to compare.
- Group make-up. Ask about typical group size and age range. We can find departures popular with travellers over 50.
Getting ready from North Wales
You do not need to go far to prepare. The Clwydian Range near Ruthin, the Horseshoe Pass above Llangollen and sections of Offa’s Dyke Path make good training walks. A few longer weekend walks before you travel will show you how your legs and boots cope with consecutive days.
What to check before you book
- Insurance. Make sure your policy covers the activities you plan, including any altitude limits, and declare any medical conditions. See our travel insurance page.
- Protection. Flight-inclusive packages carry ATOL protection through our suppliers. Our guide to ABTA and ATOL protection explains how to check yours.
- Kit list. Ask the operator for their kit list and break in new boots before you go.
- Share your plans. Leave your itinerary with someone at home, especially on self-guided trips.
Getting to the airport from Wrexham
Manchester Airport and Liverpool John Lennon Airport are the closest major airports for most North Wales departures. Our Manchester airport transfers and Liverpool airport transfers pages explain the options from Wrexham and Ruthin.
Solo adventure holiday FAQs
Am I too old for an adventure holiday?
No. Many adventure operators design trips specifically for travellers over 50. The right trip depends on your fitness and interests, not your age.
Do I need to be very fit?
Not for gentle-graded trips. Be honest about what you can manage comfortably over several days in a row, and we will match the trip to it.
Will I be the only solo traveller in the group?
Unlikely. Solo travellers make up a large share of many small-group adventure departures. Ask us about the typical group on the trip you are considering.
Can you book flights from Manchester or Liverpool?
Yes, depending on the route and operator. Tell us your preferred airport and we will price the options together.
